WaterFunThis is a collection of conditions that have childhood developmental issues as the common characteristic. Most of these conditions have symptoms that overlap with ADHD, thus causing confusion in diagnosis and therefore in treatment as well.

The most well known of these is Autism. Autism is defined as “a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by impaired social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, and restricted and repetitive behaviour.”

Autism is also referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder which simply means that people with autism can display a range of symptoms

Up until the publication of the DSM V in 2013, no one was “permitted” to have ADHD and Autism together - you could only one or the other.

The DSM V removed that exclusion, as it was found that successful treatments for both conditions overlapped.

Aspergers Syndrome has been declassified as a disorder on it’s own and is now part of the Autism Spectrum Disorder. Personally I have always felt that Aspergers is part of ADHD as there are many common symptoms

There are two rare conditions which are treated in a similar fashion, one of which was described in 1908, some forty years before Autsim was described. Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, CDD, is condition where there is a sudden regression after a normal development period.

People with CDD lose cognitive, social, language, motor skills, and other skills over a short period of time.

The other rare condition is Rett Syndrome which affects brain development causing a progressive inability to use muscles for body movement, speech and eye movement.

Then finally there is a group that uses the acronym, PDD-NOS, which stands for pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified.

People will get this diagnosis when the full set of Autism or Aspergers criteria are not met.

It is heartening to see that people with Autism are starting to be recognised for their intelligence and their problem solving abilities. Apple, Microsoft and Google are deliberately employing people with Autism in order to exploit their unique abilities.

ADDers are in the majority of inventors and entrepreneurs and have been since biblical times.

The time is fast approaching when people with so-called disorders will sought after, not looked down-on for simply being different.
