ADHD Treatment Wheel

youngandreA DREAM IS LIKE A RACE – YOU NEVER GIVE UP... you keep fighting until you get there. We all dream. I was the dreaming champion at school (as all of us who have ADHD are). But there are different types of dreams.

I'm not talking about the airy fairy day dream type dream, I'm talking about a real dream that gets under your skin, hits you in the gut and really takes hold of you, dreams with meaning and purpose to you! Those are the dreams you need to hold onto, to write down and come back to. Don't let them flit away in the ADHD storm inside your head, or is that just me?

Let the dream come to you... it's your property, keep it safe, never let it go!

My first real, grown up dream hit when I was 17, in 1965. Some well-meaning friend gave me the book "Men, Rivers and Canoes" by Ian Player, about his first trip down the Dusi and Umgeni rivers and the subsequent growth of the Dusi Canoe Marathon. I was totally captivated.

I had to do that race!

White WaterI went with my mother and a friend to watch the start of the '65 race and that was it! I followed my dream, cycling into town on my bike one night to join a canoe club, finding out how to build a fiberglass and vinyl canoe and then learning the route of the race with the canoe club.

The race itself was a disaster, 2 days before the start, I cut my knee and got 7 stitches, didn't even finish the first day, but next year ('67) I was back and finished, exhausted and sick, probably stone last, with my partner not talking to me!

Next year was better, and the next even better until in '73 I won the singles race. The dream came true! I went on to win the singles in 73, 74, 76, 79 and 80, the Mixed doubles every year from 81 to 85.

You can't foresee where your dream will take you. You can't foresee when the dream will end, you just have to know your dream and live it!

Never stop!

I've got Rheumatoid Arthritis and it is painful and debilitating. But this year in just a few days time I am going to be doing the Dusi for the 36th time.

There are no limits for dreams; just the same as there are no limits to achievements.

What are your dreams?

  • Do you have one?
  • Do you have a game plan to fulfil it?
  • Remember, there is no limitation on dreams; the only limits are those that you impose, and you are never too young, and you are never too old to live you dreams.

Dream action...

If you are an ADHDer you need to dream physical action. We need to be physical! Dream races, events, challenges ....

"Exercise vigorously and regularly—it helps work off excess energy and aggression in a positive way and soothes and calms the body.

Eat a wide variety of healthy foods and limit sugary foods in order to even out mood swings."

My favourite quote, "Dream it. Live it!"
