Imagine you are a manager of a business or department and you are frequently having to deal with some of your staff whose performance is erratic and often infuriating.
They come up with the most brilliant ideas, frequently solving really difficult problems and issues, while their desks are a chaotic cluttered mess. They are often the last to arrive at meetings, and then they seem to daydream their way through the session.
On the other hand, they sometimes don’t grasp the simplest of instructions and end up ruining well laid plans.
Their behaviour is often incomprehensible; they manage complex tasks brilliantly, but fail miserably on simple routine tasks.
They may also appear to not understand the urgency, or significance of what’s happening in the office, they may also do the reverse - believing things are worse than are - and overstate the nature of assignments.
They often blurt things out at inappropriate times, or forget what they are saying mid-sentence,
You are probably having to deal with someone who has Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), or the quieter version - Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).
ADHD is usually regarded as a childhood condition, which it is. But it exists in adults too. In fact 4 out 5 children with ADHD or ADD have at least one parent with the condition.
The important statistic is that approximately - and variably - 10% of any population group or gathering will have ADHD. That means that in your company, or department 1 in 10 people will have a variant of ADHD.

ADHD - when it is managed effectively and sustainably - is a gift that needs to be nurtured and exploited.
Exploit the gift productively to the benefit of all, the ADDer will be gratified and inspired to deliver more. Exploit the benefits of ADHD kindly, don’t break the ADDer. She or he is after all, your golden goose.
The key issue for you as a manager is that ADHD must be managed effectively, most of the time.
